Artist Statement

K. Medulla’s work explores Afrofuturism through two distinct styles: imaginative masks and celestial beings. The masks draw from African ancestry, reinterpreted as futuristic symbols of celebration, identity, and transformation. Exaggerated features, textures, and vibrant colors invite viewers to see themselves as multidimensional and spiritual connections that reflect cultural practices. The celestial figures, painted in deep blue hues, embody the higher self—an energy aligned with nature, healing, and cosmic forces.

Blending organic and technological aesthetics, Medulla uses materials such as wood, crystals, foliage, resin, metallics, and found objects to merge ancestral wisdom with futuristic innovation. Layered textures and glowing elements suggest advanced energy sources, while the masks’ exaggerated teeth function as symbolic bio-intelligent interfaces, bridging mythology and technology. Through this mixed-media approach, the work illustrates how spiritual and technological evolution coexist.

At the heart of this practice is a vision of futures where African spiritual systems serve as the foundation of advanced civilizations. Masks are presented as sacred technology, unlocking healing, ancestral connection, and liberation. The celestial beings embody transcendence, existing between physical and spiritual realms. By merging mythology, science, and spirituality, Medulla reframes Blackness as infinite—divine, expansive, and powerful. Her work challenges traditional narratives and reimagines the future as a space of boundless possibility.
