“Art Dojo”

Curated by K. Medulla, Art Dojo was Bookstore Gallery’s first artist residency, transforming the conference room into an immersive, interactive space. The resident artist was Nigel Davis of Atlanta, Ga. Along with designing print and digital content, K. Medulla curated selected artworks, helped produce a paper chandelier sculpture. Studio materials were brought in to create a lived-in, artist-inspired environment.

The residency explored self-reflection, love, heartbreak, feminism, pro-Black identity, and spirituality, with private tours giving patrons deeper insight. Patrons were encouraged to participate in drawing and writing prompts within the installation room. The opening featured complimentary art prints and hemp teas. The closing included partnerships with Ape Water to musical vibes by DJ Kiya Lacey, and signature “Art Dojo” themed cocktails. California artist, Eanaj Janae, collaborated on designing a scavenger hunt through QR code to engage patrons with the artwork and amenities provided by Bookstore Gallery.

The Artist: Nigel Davis

Nigel Davis is an Atlanta native. Through his use of color, texture, and form, he seeks to create works that are both visually striking and emotionally evocative. Davis is drawn to bold, vibrant colors and the interplay of light and shadow, which allows him to capture the subtle variations in tone and texture.
